Raini && Odyssey

the envitable exhaustion of motherhood had undeniably set in. whilst the intial thrill and insurmountable joy that accompained the birth of her children still lingered, filling her veins with a bubbly kind of eurphoria that had come as a pleasantly foreign surprise, she feels the blow to her health like a boulder to the skull.

her joints sing in a pertual symphony of pain, never subsiding, never easing despite the streches she attempted. exhaustion clings to her like a second skin, slowing each movement, shortening her periods of consciousness. her children had grown fast, faster than she herself had ever percieved to be possible. they scramble and climb about the den on a daily basis, tearing about a reckless kind of energy that is only possessed during youth. their pleads for entertainment, for compainship outside of the den become a daily song; they ache for the wonders of the outside world, but lack the ability to compete against the harshness of the outside world. so, for the first few days, the silver maiden has kept them safe and dry inside the warm, milky confines of her den, montoring their playfights, cuddling them to her breast, as any nurtering mother would.

yet today, finally, after constantly denying them the adventures they crave, Raini folds neatly to her feet and nudges each awake in turn, lapping at the top of their downy heads, prodding with her cold, wet nose. her daughter, Odyssey, peels open twin orbs of chocolate brown and drinks in her mother's sleep-mused pelt and blearly eyes. at Raini's gentle encouragement, she scrambles away from the sleeping frame of her sibling and slowly follows her mother into the bright, early dawn.

vibrant shades of pink and orange paint the sky in intricate brushstrokes, whilst the sun, already a large shimmering circle on the horizon, bathes the world in the hues of the early moring. with wide eyes and a pounding heart, Odyssey Sierra Ayami-Hanks smiles broadly and races across the beach.

Atticus was awake the second his sister left his side, her warmth only a faint trace lingering by his side. Disproportionate paws scramble to lift his body up as he tumbles after her. The silver pup hadn't even spoken his first words yet, but he already felt bonded to the slightly smaller pup. Sleep usually consisted of brother wrapped around sister. A natural instinct to protect her.

It was this instinct that pulled him towards her outside the den. But as the morning sun peaked over the horizon and fell onto his small frame just outside the den's mouth, Atticus paused. Royal blue eyes closed. The sun's warmth stretched across his silver-tipped pelt, pulling out the black undertones of his fur.

Then, as if he had been momentarily hypnotized, he snapped back to reality. Once again, he launched himself forward to follow his sister. He was protective of her, yes. But there was still sibling rivalry, and Atticus wasn't going to let his sister experience the whole world without him.

No matter how many times he watched the two small pups, Jason still couldn't believe he was a father. That he had created such beautiful life in the world he had once sworn against. But there he was, a father of two beautiful pups.

Beautiful, but mischievous.

Jason could not count the number of times they had tried to escape the den. And their energy, it was relentless! Yes, they slept often. But whenever they were awake, they were bouncing off the walls! In times of exhaustion, it was easy for Jason to forget that he had been exactly the same in his days as a pup. In fact, he might have been worse, for he had even left the den without his parent's permission. Still, Jason was happy. Exhausted but happy. And he was even happier to finally see the pups leaving the den.

He followed closely after his son, admiring the way the boy instantly followed his sister. Not as a shadow. No, more of a protector. Once again, Jason was reminded of his childhood, and his connection with his own sister, Layomi.

Jason stepped forward to be shoulder-to-shoulder with Raini. He kept his children within his view, but he turned to look at the silver maiden beside him. It pained him to see her so exhausted all the time. "You know I love you, right?"

Raini && Odyssey

Everything was so new.
So vibrantly, wonderfully new. Every inch of this beach was an entire other world; a universe in which each step was an adventure. With a burst of unrivalled excitement, Odyssey charges down the beach. With each step, her heart pounds faster, her veins hum with electric energy. She relishes the breeze as it rakes wild fingers through her fur, relishes the damp sand between her toes and the rush of adrenaline charging throughout her small frame. She devours the distance between the den and the ocean, an unstoppable, impenetrable force; a child, yes, but an invincible one, one that would yield to nobod-thud.

Fur presses against her, soft, familiar fur, infused with the scents of milk and safety. Mother. She raises her tiny cranium, eyes shining, brows furrowing, gazing into Raini’s warm, open face. But there is a sternness to the silver maiden, a firm decision resting within those bright blue depths. Her mother chuckles, amused, and shifts forward, pressing the pup away from the water, from those wild, relentless waves lapping hungrily at the shore.
“Mother!” she whines, voice rising with indignance, turning to peer past the Water beta. Impatience stirs in her gut; impatience and an insurmountable longing. “I want to see the waves!”. Her mother merely presses closer, leaning forward to nudge her daughter further up the beach. “You have seen them”. Odyssey grunts, tiny claws scrabbling against the sand, attempting to resist, to break free. She was an explorer, a bold adventurer! She couldn’t leave, not now, not when she was so close. “But I want to go into them”. She huffs, irritated, as Raini guides her forward, towards her brother, who has bounded from the den, alert, every inch Raini and Jason’s son.

“Not today, dear” Raini murmurs, shaking her head in one elegant motion. “The waves are fierce. We’ll explore the ocean another time”. With that, she turns, trotting up the beach to join Odyssey’s Father. For a moment, the pup merely watches, ebony lips curling into a perfectly curved pout. But then her eyes shift, chocolate eyes dancing with mischief, and she bounds across the beach, attempting to knock into Attics and pull him to the floor in a tangle of limbs and fur. “Grr! I’m a terrifying beast! Tremble before my might!”.
From her place beside her mate, Raini heaves a weary sigh, that familiar exhaustion tugging at her limbs. Slumping to the sand, she nudges Jason, lapping at his cheek affectionately, should he allow. “And I love you, too”.

The silver pup's legs blurred in his pursuit of his sister, but his mother's longer limbs ultimately defeated him in reaching Odyssey first. So close. The young pup had been so close. Atticus slowed until he was still, standing between mother and sister and father. A small sigh escaped his lips, and it was the only sign of his disappointment. It seemed that they would not be playing in the water today.

But his disappointment was short lived as Odyssey came racing in his direction. With only seconds to react, he barely managed to steel himself against her rush. Still, they both went tumbling. Atticus felt the breath escape from his lungs as his side hit the ground, releasing a large gasp. He quickly drew in a large breath as he scrambled to his feet. A small smile now covered his face, but he did not say anything. Instead, he stood and watched, waiting for her to make her move.

A smile of awe lifted the corners of his mouth as he watched the silver she-wolf retrieve their daughter from the temptations of the lapping waves. That soft smile soon turned into a deep blush as Raini returned and licked his cheek. Returning the affectionate gesture, he turned his gaze back to the two pups. And found himself surprised to see them tumbling over each other on the ground.

The scene reminded him of a spar of his own, one that occurred so long ago with a sister whose name he hadn't spoken in such a long time. A brief moment of pain flashed behind his eyes, but he didn't let it linger. That spar in the desert had been cruel. He still had the scar on his hind leg to prove it. This spar was clearly different, and the playful smile on Atticus's lips was a clear sign of that.

Jason sighed aloud. "Sometimes it's hard to remind myself that not all families are bad," he whispered admittedly. "I still think of them sometimes." The mother who abandoned him, the father who failed him, the sister who hated him, the sibling who never spoke to him. Layomi had been his only true family, and even she had disappeared.
