whilst the man was descended from the mountain for the first time in a long while. icarus decided that he should check on one of his only friends that he actually liked. the ice man still wandered the fields, too lazy to ever leave them. if he barely left the gelid every season besides winter, then what kind of man would he be if he left the fields? not a true one that stuck to his lazy nature. icarus' head tilted to the sky, a luring howl left his lips for the one and the only warrior that he could even stand being around without wanting to rip his head off. like that earth wolf, akuma. stupid bitch had learned that icarus was not to be messed with. that scar across his neck reminded icarus that each time he saw him, he was made of warriors, not some weakling shit. not that he would fight all the time- again he was lazy unless it came to his life. his muzzle fell back to the level of his chest as he sat down, making himself comfortable for the waiting time it would take for the young warrior to show. a smile sat on his lips, actually excited to speak to his friend. after a few seasons, he had stories to tell. obviously, it had been awhile.

Rascal; short! sorry.

The dust falling out of the sky no longer interested or astonished him. He was tired and confused. He sat hunched on the ground and stared blankly into space. The crowd was off in the near distance; the buzz of noise echoed through his circle of influence, but he paid no attention to it. Until it broke loose from its vessel and flooded his chosen spot. The noise drove him to his feet to wander the edges of the gathering with a faint scowl on his face.
There was a rock on the ground. He stopped, stared at it for a moment, and kicked it idly. It flew in the air and landed a few feet away.
The black knight followed it, kicked it again, observed the rapid flight along the ground, and smiled.
His third kick was a doozy; he felt the connection with the pebble, watched the object float gently up into the air, and then, with a faint wince, observed it return to earth by way of another person's head. Or, at least, so it looked to him. Like he'd kicked a rock and it had fallen on someone else. He grinned awkwardly and stared off into the distance, shuffling rapidly away from the scene while his victim frowned uncertainly up at the sky.
To avoid further notice, he very casually spotted someone he recognized, sidled toward their approaching form, tripped gallantly over his own feet, and staggered. While righting himself, he thought maybe the stranger he'd assaulted was looking at him suspiciously. He struck up an immediate conversation, squinting innocently up at the sky.
"Hey, hello. Do you like this? I don't."
The Stardust Festival was so - crowded, and confusing, and the events tended to make him more uncomfortable than anything else. Other than his dalliance with Quilla, it was all in all a bit of a bummer. He'd always thought so.

it wasn't long until the boy showed his face to the lonely man. icarus looked to the other when he swooped in beside him like the knight in shinning armor that he was for divine. "hm? you mean the stars missing or the crowd. i can't stand crowds. too many fucking idiots here.." he grunted as he glanced around them, shaking his head before his eyes flickered back to the sky, wondering what the gods had in mind. "do you know where they went? the stars? i have no clue what happened." he muttered as he shifted on his rump, eyebrows furrowed, making his bangs hide them. he shook his head quickly before he looked back down to the ground, rolling his eyes. all he knew is it was hot and crowded and all he wanted to do was be alone- but, with rascal. "how have you been? any good things happen in divine?" the pale princess asked. his gaze returns back to the other, sweetly, not the harsh gaze that it usually was for everyone else. rascal was the only soul that he didn't truly, passionately hate nor was deeply in love with. there was no real middle for icarus. it was go big or go home.

He'd meant the crowds; he was totally convinced that the stars would reappear in their own time. He turned his eyes up toward them, smiled vaguely, and shrugged. In the background, his assault victim scowled and apparently decided that he wasn't worth going after. Or that he wasn't the culprit. Either way, the black knight had clearly gotten away with his crime. He relaxed accordingly and turned his thoughts toward deciphering his friend's various topics of conversation. The stars, yes. Where they had gone? He didn't know. To the - star place. The place where stars went. Like the wastelands, where he had gone, and also the rest of his family. He assumed there was a place like that in the sky. He briefly imagined that he had wings and could go investigate it.
In his thoughts, he flew up there, bumped into a cloud, went off course, and ended up helping someone fight off sky pirates. Said person was a girl that looked shockingly similar to the one from Fire; the one who was Singer's daughter. His eyes took on a faraway look as they kissed over the remains of a disemboweled brigand and then snapped back to attention as he recalled suddenly that Icarus was both present and speaking to him.
"Um."
What had the ice wolf been talking about? Divine? How it was in Divine. If anything good had happened in Divine. Yes, obviously.
"Oh," he said, "It's sort of.."
Uneventful?
He thought about Quilla suddenly and smiled, then shook his head.
"..the same as always, I guess. You know. Lots of crabs."
A pause. Maybe Icarus, being from the mountains, didn't know what he meant.
"...they're like spiders," he explained, "But bigger. And with pinching arms."
"How's, um, the Ice?"
He had never been there, but he had always imagined that Ice was, well, icy. His mother had talked about it, once upon a time. She hadn't described the landscape in much detail. He considered, placed in his mind a special type of bird that he knew preferred the cold, and leaned conspirationally closer to the other man.
"Have you seen the ptarmigan?"
A rare species, indeed. Rascal had never seen one. His pale eyes danced, imagining vaguely what it probably looked like. Mostly white; a bird that lived primarily on the ground. Yes, he'd heard.

the thing about being friends with the divine warrior was that their conversation could be about whatever and they would still be interested in what each other had to say. it could be mindless conversation and icarus would enjoy it. he would enjoy anything besides talk of politics, really. but some things had to be spoken of and icarus was curious to see if divine was purged of it's wolves again. icarus chuckled at the other's response, "well it is good to know that the crabs haven't gone anywhere. though as it gets colder i assume they will retreat to underneath the sands." the man spoke, giving an extra thought about it in his mind before shaking his head and looking to the other, returning down to earth at the question that rascal asked. "completely boring and as solemn as ever. annoyingly boring, honestly." he muttered with an eye roll. maybe some would be killing to just sit in the mountains and practice ice skating like he was or sleep until noon like he also was doing. but after a few seasons of it, it gets taxing to find new ways to intrigue your dreams. his ears perked when the other leaned in closer, icarus blinked a few times as the other spoke, never having heard of a ptarmigan before. icarus shook his head when the other asked, "uh, no i don't think so. not that they have caught my eye though. what do they look like?" icarus asked as he tried to remember the birds that crossed through the sky in the mountains. not that he was looking at the sky too often but maybe they would catch his mind if rascal refreshened it.

The banal chatter about animals distracted him, momentarily, from his own personal problems. The sulky information about Ice was discarded as being irrelevant; Rascal was not a politician. He'd only asked to be polite, really. He had never been there, either. Maybe he would go. He wasn't so sure how to get to the place, but was pretty sure he could find it somewhere near the lake where he'd been born. It would take a long time. He might get lost.
Getting lost was the best way to have an adventure.
His pale eyes sparkled, briefly.
"Oh, no. The crabs are always there," he said. "Just like spiders. Always there."
They were probably related. Sea spiders. Land crabs. Hmm.
The change of subject to the birds brought him around from drifting into a consideration of the idea. He warmed to the subject.
"Yes, they are black and white and live on the ground. They eat seeds and lay eggs. They can't fly but they can burrow into the ground. They disguise themselves when predators come by changing into rocks or stumps and then, when it passes, they change back, which is why to kill them you have to sneak up on them; you can't just run up to them.."
He trailed off for a moment.
"A travelling alchemist told me about them once," he explained. It was funny that he often forgot how to get places or other people's names, but not information about birds or other things.

the man listened to rascal's information about animals. it made him happy that they could speak about these things instead of politics. icarus didn't truly care for them either. his tail swished behind the ice man, humming quietly as the two spoke to each other. his nose tilted into the air, smelling the feast in the distance. the interesting facts of the birds made icarus rack his mind to find a memory where they would have been. "hmmm. i don't know if i have seen one. but if you'd like, you can come to ice and search for them. i wouldn't mind nor would catori." the man spoke, giving a soft yawn to the universe before he looked over the male again with a soft hum. his body swayed from side to side as he moved with the wind a bit before he let out a grunt. "have you seen any swans? i have heard that they are quite beautiful." he speaks as he cleared his throat, looking back to the other. he still searched his mind for the bird that rascal spoke of. maybe he had seen it, he had seen lots of white and black birds but he didn't know if those were the ones that rascal was speaking of or not.

To go to Ice. Yes, that would be nice. He wondered, vaguely, if he should ask Lunafer first. Maybe. He didn't know whether it would be proper or not, but he'd gone to fire and nobody had seemed to mind, so..
He wondered what he would find there but was dragged away from thinking about it too hard. A question about swans. Yes, he knew those..
"They live in the river," he remarked, helpfully.
They were white and had black beaks. Once, when he was very small, one had chased him. That meant they lived in the lake, too.
"Also the lake."
Long-past, idyllic days.
"Did you know that geese hatch from barnacles? I've never seen it, but it's true. The alchemist said so. I think he could read, maybe. That's how he knew."
The monks could, too, but when they'd tried to teach him he hadn't really gotten the hang of it. It was just one of those things, he supposed, like how some people were fast runners and some (like him) weren't. It wasn't a problem that had bothered him especially. There were other things in life.
Besides, it wasn't like there were many carvings or scrolls to read in Doutaini.

oh? icarus had forgotten how much that rascal knew about these sorts of things and the learnings that he was gathering from the man seemed to interest him more and more. he made a mental note in his head to keep all this information stored away and to look for these birds that rascal was speaking of. his head cocked to the side as he was told that geese hatched from.. barnacles? a soft chuckle left his lips as rascal spoke of someone who had told him this. icarus had never seem geese hatch either but, from something as silly as barnacles? icarus highly doubted it, but nodded along as if he believed so. he did not want to start a small argument over something so... well, small. "the alchemist? who's that? here in doutaini?" he asked with his head turning back up right. if so, he wanted to meet this creature who had so much facts in him about birds and most likely the rest of the world. icarus would love to learn whatever anyone could spare. even if it was something as useless as birds. though, maybe one day this would all come in handy.

It had been so long since he'd thought about the alchemist. He hesitated, recalling vaguely that the stranger had been pretty secretive - even while he was imparting so much useful information on the youthful wanderer who'd stumbled across his wagon - and decided that it was pretty unlikely that Icarus would ever find him. Rascal doubted that even he would be able to track the older man down again. Besides, he might be dead. Maybe.
"In the wastelands," he offered, vaguely. "He gave me food, once. Also he told me about the monastery. That's where I became a knight errant."
If he was honest, the alchemist had probably saved his life, but maybe not. Maybe Rascal would have been able to keep wandering around the desert without starving to death. Maybe a god would have descended and whisked him away to a magical land. In any case, without the alchemist, he wouldn't have gone to the monastery, and without the monastery, he wouldn't have ever made it back to his homeland - probably.
"Don't you think it's weird how things happen?"
He hesitated.
"Like, by accident. Can you plan things out? It doesn't ever work."
He'd planned to track down his sister, or his mother, or his brothers - maybe even his father, if it was in fact not true that the man was dead - but he never had, and even if he'd managed to, his vague plans to backtrack his way to Doutaini would probably not have worked. Instead, he'd ended up in Divine by mistake, and now he had no family, but at least he had - friends? Countrymen? Something.
A job, if nothing else.
