Felix stood on a limestone outcrop under a sky of dense grey clouds. The smell of sodden redwoods and soil permeated the air and mud clung to his legs. Banks of fog were crawling over the eastern ridges, like his breath around the contours of his nose, and the dreary valley below was slick with rain and sleet. Soft thunder rolled above the creak of the trees and the whisper of the wind in the conifers. Once or twice, a hawk cried in the sky.
The wolf pup was damp, but his rich sable fur shielded him well enough from the elements. Still, he shivered. It seemed, to him, that the whole world laid before him, veiled in mist and secrets. He had only to watch and listen to glimpse the things that lurked there. Or to hunt them, and find them.

Philippa’s boy was, as far as he was aware, alone. Felix checked over his shoulder just to make sure, but there was no one. Clancy and Thisbe, he guessed, hadn’t decided to follow him yet. Or if they had, they were still too far away to find him. A sigh swirled around his muzzle as he accepted this, then Felix crept out of the Grove upon a well-worn path, heading south toward Haya’s borders.
A quiet sort of desperation followed him out, biting his ankles, growing as his exhilaration grew. Every step arranged the possibility of his escape. Every new second threatened his capture. Felix knocked back his ears to listen for sounds of pursuit, and a faint grin perched on his cheeks when he heard none. His brisk walk became a jog, and his jog became a run. At first, it was exciting, being alone and running. Then the trail became steeper and muddier, and he felt himself losing control. Gradually, then all at once. After that, the only thing on his mind was the determination to keep up with his paws, while a toothy, wild sort of smile broke across his muzzle.
Then the path snuck to his left, he toppled forward, and the young boy rolled a couple times down the slope. The world was upside down, right-side up, and upside down again until he was too dizzy to tell which was which. Finally, the slope dumped him in a heap on the edge of a huge, cold mud pit belonging to one of the Valley's shallowest tributaries. For several moments, he laid perfectly still, collecting his breath and his wits.
“Uhhg.” Slowly, Felix sat up. He was slicked head to toe in sludge, and he spat a mouthful of it on the ground beside his paws. Maybe, he thought with a wince, he could still make it to the borders.
all welcome

the oldest awakes within moments of felix's departure. a grumble leaves his young lips as he pulls himself away from his warm family and starts to go after the youngest of them all- even if it was by a few seconds. there was no way he would let his brother leave on his own. clancy always had a little bit of anxiety if one of his siblings left. he looked over the den before he started to waddle out, small legs trotting after the brother that had left before he could catch up with him. he was still small, mohawk barely creeping up his neck as his mother's curls hung low over his chest. he grumbled, he looked different from his brother and sister, though he didn't mind it. they were all colored with the same deep oak brown that their mother had none of. where was there father? the one covered with oak? clancy didn't know as he moved forward, trying to follow the scent of his mischievous brother. oceanic eyes search the grove as the smell leads out- to places uncharted and clancy would not let his siblings explore without him! so, he picks his small body into a run, clomping after his other third pair.

clancy reaches the other, almost in time to watch him fall over the path that seemed to steep for the two of them. clancy made sure to not fall like his brother did. felix! felix! where are you going? he hums, loudly so the other can hear before he reaches them. the young male pushing in front of his brother. without me, thisbe or mother? oh, just like a mother to scold the other, but worry crossed his features as he looked about, something deep inside him itching to move further as well, so much that he shifted on his paws, almost like a dance.

we are the colors in the dark.

His good fortune did not hold for long. He was looking around, getting his bearings. The mud pit was huge and churned up in places by the hooves of whatever beasts lurked within their Valley. In other places, it was slick with puddles of icy water. Felix took a deep breath. He shook his head and began lifting himself up when he became aware of a young, high, familiar voice calling his name that stopped him in his tracks. Felix! Felix! Where are you going? Felix closed his eyes and tilted his ears back against his muddied head. His brows knit together as he began counting the seconds under his breath: one, two, three, four... Until he heard and felt Clancy’s presence stop in front of him.

Felix opened his eyes. The other boy seemed, to his younger brother, already regal in his youth, gifted with the same soft explosion of wavy curls at his chest that their mother had, and owning a small, handsome crest of fur along the nape of his neck. His eyes were a more profound blue than the sky between the clouds, and they looked at him from within a worried expression that Felix resented. Or maybe feared.

The muddied pup sat for a second, then jumped up to all four paws and attempted to knock his older brother down into the muck, hoping that Clancy would land on his rump. “Stop following me,” Felix warned quietly, the irritation in his voice mirrored in his sullen, dirtied face. But as he looked a second or two longer, he regretted it. He didn’t want to push Clancy away, so he didn’t know why he did what he did or said what he said. He couldn’t fix it either; he couldn’t think of the right way. So he turned roughly and began clambering out of the mud pit, ignoring the minor aches from the fall. He was still going to the borders, he decided. He didn’t care about Clancy or anyone else trying to stop him. Or tagging along.

clancy awaited his brother's response. but, before there was speaking, there was action- something clancy didn't even suspect. his brother's paws bopped him back to his rump. clancy sat, in shock, frozen in time. then, he got upset, why would his brother do that? his eyes flicker to his fallen paws, whining as he pushed himself back up. where was mother to scold him? a small growl came from his lips as he picked himself up, running after his brother. he rammed their shoulders together, making a satisfied sound as he did so before trotting alongside him. fine. then i shall follow. he wouldn't leave his siblings side. he would not let his brother face danger alone. what if a monster scared his brother? clancy would have to make his mighty growl again and puff his proud, lion mane.

the young trotted alongside him, in the back of his mind, worried of his family. then the shadow of a wolf entered his mind, were they going to find father? one that had not met. clancy's ocean eyes flicker back to his brother, opening his mouth to speak before he quieted again, looking back to the path in front of them. he shouldn't ask, his brother was already mad at him for following. i shall never stop following you, brother. we are family. he whispers, under his breath. clancy was devoted to family. he had to be there for them, he had to coddle them, make sure that they were all happy, even mother. such a big responsibility for someone with such small paws.

we are the colors in the dark.

Thisbe had been snuggled up to Mother, warm and cozy, but the rumbles of nearby thunder had woken her from a perfect dream. Her oceanic and gold optics could not focus as well as when her senses fully loaded in consciousness, but a silhouette the size of tiny Felix skittered out from the den. It seemed since that boy could walk, he was constantly trying to run away. Sister was surprised he didn't give up already; he knew Clancy would follow him, so why bother? The tri-colored she-pup rolled over, hoping to regain her lost shut-eye. Sadly, with a sheepherder and a lost soul for siblings, that wouldn't happen anytime soon. "One night. All I ask is one night!" The child growled, her rare anger bubbling to the top and sloshing from her lid.

Thisbe was going to learn how to be a good tracker at this pace; the only good outcome at this pace, she thought. Before long, sable ears sensed the cries of her squabbling siblings. Good thing too: her little sniffer was becoming cold and wet, no thanks to the damn weather. "OI!" She howled, carefully sliding down to Felix and Clancy, "Could this wait until after the storm?! Geez!" Her eyes absorbed the lightning and her littermates became less pixelated, realizing Felix was coated in mud. The Valentine sighed and came close to him and would attempt to clean him up if he would let her.
"Once we're a year, I heard stories that we can go wherever we want! I can't wait! I want to go fight some Rebels!" Of course, she would feel bad about abandoning her mother, but maybe she could come too? Yeah!! A whole family trip!

With her strength and energy returning, Philippa continued to settle into the home she was making for her children and herself. Storm was as foreign to her as it was to her children, though the stories her father had told her stayed with her throughout the years—stories of their family and the great, golden tree of Haya. Dark sable lips twitched into a smile. Philippa was eager to share the world with her children, but their slumbering ears would have to wait. Rose-champagne eyes dwell on each of them in turn, admiring the happiness they instilled in her heart—a happiness she had once questioned if she might ever find. Bastion still had not been seen and she wondered if he ever would—for now, at least, she was in this alone.

With the sleeping trio safe within the den, Philippa wriggled her way towards the opening of the den with the intent of building her stockpile of herbs and plants in a final harvest before the chill of winter could wholly steal them away. Stopping at the opening beneath the wooden pillars, she cast a look over her shoulder longingly and nearly rejoined the children at rest. Forcing svelte legs forward, however, the woodland lover soon disappeared into the distance. Philippa navigated her way through the brambles and lifted roots among a colossal forest of towering giants looming over her and watching her every move, but it was here that she felt at peace and where the canopy warded off and dulled the booming thunder. Her collection grew in the replacement of supplies, before she grew satisfied and made way to return to the den. Upon arriving back home, Philippa mused with a humming tune as she peered inside the den. Morganite eyes were drawn wide as her mouth dropped open, scattering the contents of her gathering mission to the floor as she rushed into the den only to find it empty. Her heart pattered against her chest widely as panic set in, breaths staggered in disarray when she caught a trail of their scents leading away from the den.

Philippa rushed after them wildly, a mother’s fierceness in her gaze as she tore through the woodland, of which she had just taken delicate care not to disturb. It mattered little in her frenzied pursuit as rosé eyes scanned the horizon in a frantic search. Nostrils flared to trace their scent and her heart sunk when she discovered the trail led to a perch overlooking the valley below—what scene would she find when she peered over the edge? Fear kept her glued in place, but desperation urged her forward again. The slope was treacherous and the panicked mother searched the valley below for a clue of her children. Their voices rose in accord with the cacophony of thunder overhead, as Philippa scaled the ledge and slid down the embankment towards them. She caught Thisbe’s words as fear struck in her heart—why could she not hold on to them forever and keep them in her nest? They were the only love she had left, her heart divided equally into three pieces for which she needed them all to be considered whole. It was a selfish thought to imagine she would be able to keep them close as they grew older and dared to take flight away from the nest, and she had not thought to have faced this reality so soon. “But you are not a year old yet, and when you want to go somewhere, you must tell me first. Do you three have any idea how worried I was to find you missing?” Philippa reprimanded with her brow fixed in a stern expression to replace the worry that had overcome her before.

But she couldn’t stay mad at them for long—she loved them too fiercely and was relieved to have found them relatively unharmed. “Oh, what a mess you are.” She commented more light-heartedly as surveying eyes stopped on Felix, shaking her head from side to side gently before moving towards the youngest in an attempt to wipe away some of the mud with her paws.

Walking away from his brother’s whine was the last thing he wished to do and yet Felix couldn’t bring himself to stop or turn around. Guiltily, he clasped his ears to his dirty head as he trudged to the bank. His brother’s growl was more tolerable, and, biting his lip, he resolved not to feel bad about what he’d just done to Clancy. His older brother was capable of taking care of himself, just like Felix. Or so the boy wanted to think. But he had only a few moments to realize the stamp of feet in the mud was coming closer, and then Clancy bumped their shoulders together. He was coming along, like it or not. Felix fixed his brother with an agitated look. “Go home,” Felix muttered. Relief, however, robbed his voice of its conviction.

He trotted forward in silence, beginning to notice the rich, loamy aroma of damp earth rising from him. The next comment from Clancy went by nearly unnoticed - a whisper lost in the whisper of drizzle and wind - but Felix caught the end of it and gave Clancy a bemused sidelong look. He said nothing, nor would he have had the time to do so if he’d been inclined, as their sister, little Thisbe, came swashbuckling down the slope with a howl. Felix stopped and pivoted, and in that moment Thisbe swept up to him and began cleaning him of the filth and grime he’d accumulated. He stared at his sister in mute disbelief, which slowly unraveled to an expression of uncomfortable tolerance. He let her do as she pleased. She was as spirited as a storm and he doubted he could match her, already. Pretty and dark as oil with fairweather blue eyes - as Felix looked at them, he wondered why she and Clancy had them. He said nothing about her wish to fight the Rebels, although it seemed very brave.

Their mother’s words snuck up on him right at that moment, pouncing upon Thisbe’s words, and Felix jerked his head back at the sound. Surprise then guilt assailed his features. First, his eyes grew wide as little moons, and then he hung his head in shame. The boy knew his mistake that instant and it thoroughly gutted him. It was not that he’d left the den without telling anyone, or that he’d inspired a mini-exodus from the Grove; his mistake was that he’d been so careless. He bit his lip and shuffled his paws, unable to think of anything to say or do to make up for it. But her softer tone of voice caught him off-guard, and she was on him in a moment, wiping the mud from him almost like Thisbe had done. Felix didn’t trust himself to speak - he felt something of a frog in his throat - and he laughed quietly instead. He glanced at Thisbe, then Clancy and smiled faintly at him, then started wiping the mud off his legs with his own paws as well.
Clancy, sorry for the wait guys!

the words that leave his brother's lips don't sway him anymore than the last had. clancy was a true creature, one that would stand up for his morals. and his morals? being there for his family even if they thought he wasn't needed. clancy looked back to their sister who had followed, clancy wasn't afraid of the storm, or angered by it. he liked it. loved it, even. it was calming, the claps thunder and the flashing lights. they were alive. even if he was muddied by the dirt and rain. clancy looked to his sister, she spoke of fighting and the young pup gave a shrug with a soft grunt. his eyes flickered to a sound that was not far off- their mother. his ears sprung up in the air as he looked back, a smile slipping on his lips as his tail wavered from side to side, mother could bring felix home. his head fell to look at the ground when they were spoken to with such disappointment. his eyes flickered back to the other two as she commented on how dirty they were, clancy just gave a nod as he started to wipe himself off, yet their mother went to the youngest- the one who had ran. his ears fell back for a moment before he huffed. he looked back to where the grove was.

what is beyond here that you want, felix? they had everything they needed. warmth, love, food. his ocean eyes looked over to the other, giving a soft 'hm?' as his eyebrows raised. he moved to his sister's side, giving their shoulders a nudge in affection.

we are the colors in the dark.
