Fear is held in his eyes as his heart hammered relentlessly within his chest, paws drumming against the earth as the bold lion charged upon the horizon. Keston had seen the looming cloud over the Gaia with chaotic bouts of lightning and pummeling sheets of rainfall that would drown his family and friends before they had a chance to escape. The Lioncourt could not merely sit by and watch as destruction tore through without cause. Arriving at the borders, his head tilted back with funneled lips cupping his voice as it rose above the great canopy of the forest in a roaring howl. The rushing of water drew his attention where heavy bouts of rain had overtaken the earth, shaping it anew as the force carved the earth into new form. It pained his heart to watch the element he cherished devouring the homeland of his children and their mother, the woman he had confessed his love for and watched as the gods took two of their children into the stars to play forevermore. Keston cannot lose Asceo, Roscoe, or Amelia, for he feared it would be the end of him. Desperate and ingrained with a hero complex, the king inhaled deeply as he had done many times before, and held his breath from the moments that ensued. The powers of evaporation soon become evident as droplets of water are extracted from the Gaia, flooding his bloodstream and diluting the plasma of his blood. He knows the danger, but he pressed on—though despite his efforts, he alone could not combat the raging storm. Rain-soaked and tired, the leonine man felt his concentration waver while his head suddenly felt light, dizziness overpowering him before he toppled over into the mud along the borders. The glowing light of his sapphire necklace faded and the golden man slipped from his state of mind into a dreamlike place.

Asceo rushed through the muddy Gaia, dirty water pooled around her paws as she splashed through the floodwaters towards the temple. Keston's howl careened through the trees, just barely audible in the gale. It sounded as if he raced for the temple as his voice carried over a long distance. She put her head down and ran harder, fighting the mud that dragged at her feet. Water pelted her and she was soaked to the bone by the time she reached the temple. There, stood Keston, with droplets of water flocking to him from the temple itself. The rain around him stopped midair and absorbed into his drenched fur.

"Keston, stop! What are you doing?" she howled as she raced towards him at full pelt. "Stop, please!" she cried.

I can't lose you.

Keston wavered and the water around him began to fall as the storm goddess intended, and he fell. The mud splashed onto his golden body, marring it's luster. He lay still as the torrent pounded over him.

Asceo shook her head to clear the water from her eyes and sprinted to Keston's side. The blue glow of his necklace faded away and his eyes were closed. He lay unmoving. She pressed her face to his chest. The gentle rise and fall of his breath was faint, but it was there. Her head drooped in relief. Keston was alive.

She sat back. Asceo didn't know if using life would be enough to keep him alive, but she couldn't diagnose him, she didn't know or understand Water's powers and how they worked. Did they leech his strength as they did hers and poison him from within? He hadn't vomited, a sign that poison didn't run through him. She frowned, puzzled. How would she heal him if she couldn't see his ailment?

The wind whipped at her fur and she huddled close to Keston, to keep them warmer in the icy downpour. Water was threatening to pool around them as the ground absorbed all the water it could hold. With mud squelching between her toes, Asceo sat back up and began massaging Keston's chest and body with her paws. She knew of no plant that could wake him, nor how she would even use it. Her knowledge wasn't enough this time. With a whine, she worked her paws furiously, trying to force his body to respond to her.

"Keston, wake up. Please wake up!" she snapped. He had to, he had children to raise with her–he had to be there for her. "We need you," she begged. "You have to wake up! Think of Roscoe, Amelia. Please."

Tears began to roll down her cheeks, washed away by the cold rain. Lightning cracked overhead like the sound of her heart threatening to break.

From beyond the tremors of a faltering mind, cerulean eyes catch upon the faint traces of her face breaking through the tree line. It was a fleeting glimpse, one he was not entirely sure was reality or a dream, before his body slumped into the mud and he lost his golden sheen. Agonizing moments ticked by as drops of rain pelted his unconscious features, terrorizing his demeanor that lacked all emotion. Yet her voice broke through—the trilling sweet intonation that made his heart turn wild was calling out to him, but she was just out of reach. The veil of unconsciousness held him back, pinning him to the earth with iron-forged shackles. Keston’s mind wills him to wake, but his body is too exhausted and the viscosity of his blood is so thin that a single scrape might exsanguinate the mighty lion. Her words turn towards their children, and though his senses were dulled while in this state, their voices were not heard. “Roscoe, Amelia…are they safe?” He wants to call out in reply, for knowing their safety was ensured would make all this worth it—nevertheless, the sunkissed king remained unchanged until the remedy of time could awake him once again.

Keston seemed to stir at her words, but faintly. Asceo didn't know what to do. For the first time in a long while, she couldn't heal him. She couldn't fix the problem like she usually did. She was helpless. Her sides heaved with her pain. Sobs wracked her drenched body. So she curled up beside Keston, hoping to keep him warm with her fur. Tears clouded her vision, but she called upon Kaede's magic to grow a dense bramble thicket around their bodies. Her stomach felt sick as she wove the branches tightly together, trying to block out some of the rain and protect them from the wind.

And then all she could do, was wait.
