Asceo heaved herself to her paws in the Gaia, her swollen belly of pups lurching uncomfortably with her. She had realized, far, far, too late, that she had been pregnant. It wasn't until her teats had darkened and enlarged that she realized why her girth continued to grow despite her best efforts to curb it. Guilt and shame shook her; she had swallowed herbs meant to stem the appetite when her body had been needing it. It was no shock that she was exhausted all of the time with her recent revelation. She fervently prayed to Kaede, Kurai, and Kei that Keston's pups would be born healthy regardless. I've been so naïve.

Another pang lanced through her, this time a cramp in her abdomen. She was uncomfortable and her paws ached, but maybe it was time she had considered speaking to Keston again. She hadn't seen him since their last talk. With a sigh she trotted off as best she could, though she tired frequently and needed to stop every several wolf-lengths, she was more stubborn than her cramping. It was slow going, but she finally reached the edge of the Hakai Mists when her body was struck with unimaginable pain. She yelped and almost lost her footing, but remained standing, panting heavily. Fear widened her eyes and her pupils were dilated from adrenaline. Asceo wasn't ready for this. For parenthood, for birth, any of it. Terror made her heart wild as she lurched forward onto the sands of Shoshana Shore. Every few steps made her cry out in pain as spasms began to rack her abdomen and back.

The journey would be too long. She wouldn't make it to him in time. These pups were coming whether she was ready to be a mother or not.

"Keston!" she howled desperately, her voice cracking in agony. "Someone help me!" Her cries were loud, and it was her luck that the wind blew. Hopefully it would carry her screams to Briar, to Keston, to anyone who could keep her and her pups safe. She had never seen a birth. Asceo knew they were painful, but not like this. Something felt wrong.

She stumbled forward before collapsing exhausted on the shoreline. The ocean lapped at her black paws as they scrambled in the shallows with every spasm. Asceo grit her teeth as blood trickled into the water from behind her.

No, no, no!

Her eyes rolled back as waves of agony spread through her pelvis over and over. Each contraction was getting closer, and she wasn’t sure she could take the pain for much longer.

for Keston Briar. 434 words. "speech".

notes: Asceo traveled from the Gaia and collapsed on Shoshana Shore (close enough to the water that it washes over her paws) on her way to visit Keston in Water's territory. She is unable to help herself through the birth as she had zero experience with pregnancy. Unless a wolf can coach her through it, she's in for a rough ride. She's thinks something has gone wrong because blood is trickling into the water. She will have two stillborns and two live pups. Since she is so vulnerable, Asceo is open to minor powerplay (no need to ask/imply permission to move her or touch her). I'll respond accordingly.

The Gaia was tucked away in it's little corner. A safe house of sort, especially for those who wished to keep to themselves as Briar had normally. Lately he had found himself more involved with other people. Always giving, never taking or receiving. Not that Briar was a particular greedy guy, but what had it given him? The use of Life was dangerous, the warning of Berlioz and Lament constantly screaming in his ears. It would be Kaede's magic to kill him. He knew this and he wouldn't have it any other way. As long as he could protect those he loved, and this included Asceo. He lingered in the Jinsyn when her screams reached his ears. He panicked instantly, his heart racing and his breathing labored. He couldn't imagine what could possibly be going on. But Briar thought of a million things in that second as his weight shifted backwards only to propel him forward.

Water beads into his legs, making his fur clump together and spike outwards as he races in the direction of his healer. Kaede, please. He dashes East, finding her crumpled form against the waves they had once trained against. "Asceo!", he calls desperately as he moves to find the side that kissed the waves beating against her. He would aim to place himself there to protect her from the sea that might potentially cause a problem sooner or later. Briar was no professional on birth. But the smell, oh the smell, it was the same smell of the dead child and he found himself stiff against the form of Asceo as fear seeped through him and blood kissed his timber coat. "You're OK, Asceo. Kaede will guide you. I'm here, tell me what you need.", he whined. Life could not help her here and Briar felt immediately powerless.

Oh how she loved the shore, always a wonderful place to be. Not only that but it was home to a lot of different useful herbs. She had a large array of herbs with her as she continued to gather. But that was when she heard the commotion. As she emerged from the shadows the first thing she saw were the scene in front of her and dropped her herbs to the ground before walking over to the two. "Mystery Crystal, Healer of Divine. " She gave a tilted gaze to earth male before walking over to the woman that lay on the ground. "Its alright, I need you to relax." Turning to her herbs she began working, pulling out the last Day Flower she had and mushing it up, mixing it with Blue Cohosh and Birch. Laying it down beside the woman she smiled warmly. "Here, eat this. It will help." Now she would wait, watching the woman closely to wait for the initial signs that the babies were coming. Turning to the male she cocked her head to the side. "Will you do me a favor and take this moss ball to the water and soak it." She pulled out a small clump of moss that she had gotten on her route before placing it in front of the male. At this moment she didn't know who he or the woman were except they were in Earth. And frankly she really didn't care what their rank was in their own pack. Right now she needed to take over and help the woman.

It was the moment his whole world would change, stirred into a restless state by Asceo’s call. Keston had impatiently awaited this moment as he paced back and forth among a worn path in front of his den, and now that the moment had finally arrived, his heart was lost to the chaos of the moment. Fear and excitement mingled within his chest, seizing his heart with an ironclad grasp, slowing tightening like a vice as the anxiety wore on. Though as the call arrived, he would waste little time, picking up the cured meat of an otter he had prepared for precise instance—or rather, always kept a fresher catch on hand, for he had gone through three other otters in the span of his impatience. Nevertheless, with a kick to his step, he races off in the direction of the fading call with the brined otter clutched between his teeth. Clearwater eyes discover her among the shore, not far from where they first met.

The patter of his heart thrums loudly against the cage of ribs, as though it were a land-trapped fish trying to escape back to sea. It is desperate and calm in the most antithetical of manners, but he knows he must overcome the challenge of his own concerns to be there for Asceo. Upon his arrival, he finds she is not alone—his eyes would fall towards the male as ears drawn back against the warrior king’s skull, a soft growl building in his throat as he approached. As he drew near, however, Keston discovered the emerald gem strewn around the man’s neck. Tempted to dismiss his caution, the mariner remains mindful and defensively prepared. Only the gods knew what this man was capable of—would he seek to cull the children sired by another pack? Suspicion is held behind a stately demeanor as Keston moves to be at Asceo’s side, setting the otter down for later, and moving to press his muzzle to her cheek if she allowed in silent reassurance. The scent of impending birth was thick as it saturated the air, a seeming invitation to the wayward sorts who sought to take advantage of an incapacitated mother. His attention turns to the woman of Divine, an elder who appeared to only want to help. Lips drawn in a gentle smile, for fatherhood was just beyond his reach now—how could he not be elated by such news?

The dull thud of paws running against the sand began to seep through her pain-mangled thoughts. She was unable to look up and only cried out in pain as another spasm took her.

"Asceo!" a familiar deep voice called to her.

"Briar, I–" she bit down hard to stifle another yelp. Her words had failed her. She only shook her head as her eyes squeezed tightly shut. Her entire body was tense, unwilling, unprepared. It was thanks to her naïve obliviousness that she hadn't time to mentally acquaint herself to the idea of giving birth, let alone ask another she-wolf for advice.

He seemed to understand. Briar stood between her and the relentless waves, and she knew that he would protect her in any way he know how.

"You're okay, Asceo. Kaede will guide you," he whined. His normally confident voice sounded strained and nervous. "I'm here, tell me what you need."

I don't know what I need, she thought despairly, I don't even know to give birth!

Her only audible answer was another low moan of pain.

But another she-wolf's voice sounded suddenly above her. Asceo hardly noticed her appearance, or heard what she had said, other than her name was Mystery. The only thing that gripped her mind were the contractions, the fear that she would die on this beach or deliver the pups wrong. She had already complicated her pregnancy: she had starved herself when she needed the nutrition most, eaten herbs meant to reduce appetite that were known for their nasty side effects on pregnant she-wolves, and worse, had endangered all of their lives because she was too ignorant to realize how obviously pregnant she was. Asceo was worse than unprepared–she was unfit to be a parent. She had failed Keston and her pups before they had even been brought into the world.

Another spasm passed through her and she scrabbled at the sand as she cried out.

"It's alright, I need you to relax," Mystery soothed. She turned away from Asceo for a few moments and the faint smell of herbs passed over her scent glands, mixing with the pungent odors of fear and blood.

"Here, eat this," the black-furred healer said as she pushed a mushy lump of herbs towards her muzzle. "It will help," Mystery encouraged.

She was almost too tired to try, but once another contraction had passed, she lapped it up with her tongue. Asceo did her best to ignore the grit of sand against her teeth as she clenched her jaws together to fight through the agony. She heard the healer say something to Briar, but her groans were far louder in her ears.

But the groan became louder– a growl. Confused she tried to lift her head. Had another wolf come? Unable to sit up, she settled for relying on her nose. As she took another breath, Keston's familiar scent wreathed around her, and then his muzzle was nestled against her cheek, warm and comforting.

"Keston…" she murmured, her voice low.

Asceo's reprieve was short-lived as she gasped with pain. Suddenly her body pushed. Without her consent, it had moved of it's own accord, leaped into action. Her gasp rose into a screech, as excruciating pain tore through every part of her body. Waves rippled down her back faster and faster, and she could hardly catch her breath. She was torn between breathing and holding her breath, uneven and ragged as she gasped for air between spasms.

Briar would tense against Asceo, eyes turning upwards to face Mystery with a flash of teeth as his foreleg aimed to swing over his healer's body protectively. However, as he registered the scent and the name he fell back into her protective position at her side. He trusted Divine and Mystery probably knew way more than Briar ever would or cared to about this. His name was lost in Asceo's painful yelps and Briar growled lightly only to aim to press himself into her backside reassuringly. Perhaps this is something he needed to learn, his eyes would trace the herbs Mystery offered Asceo, stifling himself from asking obnoxious questions. Asceo's pain made Briar's heart race and himself whine. Keston's growl is met with a more savage one. Teeth are bared as hackles flared only because Keston was not a known face. However, as Asceo call his name and he comes closer Briar relaxes to dip his muzzle, moving from her backside to gather the moss ball that Mystery had instructed him to take. Keston deserved the position against Asceo, comforting her as Briar only assumed this must be a friend of the father.

He aimed to swoop it up quickly and drop it into the waves where he would chase after it as the waves took it out. He would aim to nab it again and quickly deliver it back to Mystery, dropping it in the sands as his tongue repeatedly scraped against his teeth in discomfort, saltwater leaving a grotesque feeling in his throat. Briar's eyes would flicker to Keston and then back to Asceo and Mystery awaiting instruction as he keep himself poised to defend those who accompanied him now.

She worked easily and swiftly, wanting everything to go just right. As another wolf appeared she nodded her head in greeting to him, absentmindedly pushing to the side of her mind until she heard him growl. Instantly she turned to face him, bright silver eyes narrowing at him like a mother disciplining her child. "None of that." She said simply before returning her attention back to the woman on the ground. "There, there, its alright, breath. It was then that she realized that this new water wolf, Keston as he seemed to be called was the father of her pups. Still, she wasn't going to have tension around this beautiful time. "I'm assuming you are the father, I'm glad you are able to be here for this moment but no fighting, I will make you both leave if I have to." It was clear that the two males were both protective of this woman and she wasn't going to let their egos get in the way of this birth. She turned to the earth wolf as he arrived once again with the moss ball and nabbed it from his jaws, nodding her head in thank you. Laying it down beside the woman she turned towards the Earth wolf. "That goes for you too, no fighting or I will make you leave." Her voice was soft though, loving and it was clear she only wanted to help the woman. Picking up the moss ball once more she dabbed it over the earth woman's forehead, keeping her cool before placing it on her lips. "Drink" She ordered softly before turning to the two men. "The pups are coming soon." She turned towards Keston. "I need food for her to eat..." She looked over at Briar. "And a pile of soft moss and leaves to make a place for the pups to lay." She nodded towards them. "Please hurry."

"Briar Asceo Keston"

The return of a growl would ease away the smile that had rested on his features, the elation ceasing as the tension rose. In time, however, Briar would give up his place beside Asceo and the tension dissipated, yet Keston remained cautious and protective as any new father would. Or would they—there was so much still to learn of fatherhood that he was not truly sure what he should or should not be doing. His thoughts are soon swept aside as Asceo calls out to him, the lion replying with a brush of his muzzle aimed at her cheek with a silent reply, I am here, before pain rattles her body in turbulent waves. With each scream, the seaborne man turns rigid, wishing he could steal away the agony she faced as a result of their passionate embrace. The earthen man carries a ball of moss off towards the sea to ferry water among the distance, and the woman of Divine gives him an ultimatum of fighting when the matter had already been settled. Nevertheless, his ears flick back against his skull at her warning—Keston would protect Asceo and their pups against whomever towered as a threat. More moments of agony pass as he must stand there and watch her writhe in pain, before the midwife calls on him to bring food. His nose points towards the otter that he dropped off upon his arrival, having prepared for this moment since he discovered he was to be a father. Nothing would draw him away from Asceo’s side, for he would not risk the chance of missing their children enter this world.
